These beautiful boxes are hand carved in the kashmir region of India. The walnut wood used is one of the traditional craft materials used in the region and there is a strict replanting policy to ensure the continuation of this ancient craft.
Although Kashmir is in India it is bordered by China Tibet and Pakistan the crafts of the region reflect the influences of these other cultures. This is why the boxes are decorated with a variety of oriental dragons, storks,elephants anf flowers in relief work on the lids.
The sides of the boxes can be fully or semi carved. designs are skillfully carved from one piece of wood to form the top of the lid.
The insides of the boxes are wood with a plain or felt lined base. Some of the boxes are locked with a secret sliding panel at the bottom of the front panel. The sliding lock must be pushed from left to right to open the box and pushed back from right to left to close it.
The boxes are burnished using a polished stone and then finished with bees wax to give a deep warm lustre to the wood
