This is one of a range of unique hand carved boxes made by craftsmen in Kashmir. The wood is walnut from trees grown in the Kashmir valleys set in the Himalayas and subject to a strict replacement policy. The designs, although often repeated are all hand carved and therefore never exactly the same making them unique for the owner. This particular box has a carving of a walking elephant set within a 3.5" diameter circular medallion in the centre of the lid. The corners have simple carving to form a frame. The remainder of the box is plain allowing the beautiful grain of the wood to be enjoyed. The inside,including the trinket tray, is lined with bottle green velvet. The box measures 8" x 5" and is 3.5" high. The tray is 7" x 5" and 1" deep.
